In general, the ocean moderates New Zealand’s temperatures. Auckland has the sea on three sides, so the maximum daily temperatures in the city’s Albert Park cluster around 20º–27ºC. But inland at Alexandra, in central Otago, the range is much greater. Some days are hotter than in Auckland, others are much colder. Alexandra’s temperatures are affected by the warm föhn wind, which sweeps down from the mountains in the west. This explains the second ‘bump’ at 27º.
