The number of people living in New Zealand who were born in the Cook Islands increased significantly during the 1960s and 1970s before peaking at over 15,000 in 2001. As Cook Island communities established themselves in New Zealand, the numbers of people with Cook Islands ethnicity almost doubled between 1991 (37,233) and 2018 (80,532). Of these, around 85% were New Zealand-born.
