Population changes in Christchurch, 2006 to 2013

This graph highlights some of the dramatic changes of residence that followed the major earthquake of 22 February 2011. The five areas graphed at left are to the west of the city. This region was slightly affected by the September 2010 Darfield earthquake but avoided major damage in the February 2011 Christchurch quake, so many refugees moved there, leaving behind badly damaged or condemned houses in the eastern part of the city. The five areas graphed at right are in the severely affected eastern suburbs, where the population decline between 2006 and 2013 is striking.
