Going to the pictures has been a popular pastime in New Zealand since films were first regularly screened in the early 20th century. However, the rate of cinema attendance has changed dramatically since 1938, the earliest year for which figures are available. Cinema-going declined from its wartime peak as the post-war population grew larger and younger. The decline accelerated sharply with the arrival of television broadcasts in 1960. It levelled off from 1994 and stabilised at around four visits per year per head – still one of the highest rates in the world.
