Tennis club membership, 1910–2015

Membership of tennis clubs grew steadily from the early 1900s and was only curtailed by the Second World War (1939–45). Numbers dropped during the conflict because many club members served in the armed forces. After the war a concerted effort to increase club membership paid off, though numbers dipped in the 1950s. This was temporary and membership rose again to peak at just over 60,000 in the early 1980s. Since then, it has declined.
