Māori dependency ratios, 1896–2013

This graph of Māori dependency ratios – the proportion of dependent children and older people to working-age people – largely reflects increasing fertility rates among Māori women up to 1976. After this time the rate fell rapidly, largely due to the widespread use of the contraceptive pill.
