The least religious age-group in the 2013 census was aged 0–4. While it may seem strange to include young children whose parents have recorded their beliefs, there is a strong association between a parent having no religion and their children growing up to have no religion. In the early 21st century the young and middle-aged were much less religious than the elderly, who were much more likely to have had religion in their lives during childhood. This largely accounts for the prevalence of belief among the elderly.
