From the 19th century the number employed in the manufacturing sector grew by fits and starts. Large jumps, temporary plateaux and falls reflect the economic and political situation of the time. Like the figures for growth in manufacturing income, the data set this graph is based on is not consistent, and the graph indicates the trend rather than an exact count.
