Story: International economic relations

New Zealand–Australia trade, 1960–2004

Australia steadily increased its significance as a market for New Zealand’s exports from the late 1960s. The conclusion of the closer economic relations agreement in 1983 did not create the trend – indeed, after the mid-1990s it levelled off as exports to China and other East Asian economies thrived. That still left Australia as New Zealand’s single largest market for another two decades – and also the source of between a fifth and a quarter of its imports, as had long been the case.
