By 2005 more of the formerly government-owned exotic forests were in foreign ownership, and the number of companies involved had increased. Nearly 33% of the forests were owned by American companies, while around 13% were owned by Asian companies. Major New Zealand companies held a little over 7% of the exotic forest estate but, in addition to this, there was a significant proportion of New Zealand and foreign joint ventures.
