On 25 February 1908 thousands of people lined the banks of the Whanganui River to witness the world championship sculling race between the local William Webb and the Australian challenger Dick Tresidder. The race was held over 3¼ miles (5.2 kilometres). Webb won by two-and-three-quarter lengths in a time of 20 minutes 28 seconds. There was much rejoicing in Whanganui at the result.
