This poster advertises the Nambassa festival which was held at Golden Valley, near Waihī, in January 1978. This was one of four such festivals held in the Waihī area between 1977 and 1981. The festivals promoted music, crafts and alternative hippie lifestyles. There was widespread smoking of marijuana at the festivals and at the 1979 festival, which attracted over 65,000 people, there were 58 arrests for cannabis use on the first day. However, the organisers negotiated with the police and there was no further police action against users of the drug. Instead there was a smoke-in and bags of marijuana were tossed into the crowd.
