In response to some schools banning students from taking same-sex partners to their school balls, Rainbow Youth, an education service for non-heterosexual young people, organised an alternative ball in Auckland in October 2008. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer and transgender teenagers were invited to attend the ball where 'it doesn't matter who your date is or who wears a dress'. The Human Rights Commission commented that barring same-sex partners from school balls was potentially illegal. The Human Rights Act 1993 outlaws discrimination on the basis of gender and sexual orientation. Treating some students differently on the basis of their sexual orientation could be interpreted as a breach of this legislation.
