A poster advertises the 1978 film by Vincent Ward and Timothy White of Janet Frame’s 1966 novel A state of siege. Written in 1964 while she was living in a beach cottage on Waiheke Island, the book is about a retired secondary-school teacher living in similar circumstances. The sense of menace in the novel, conveyed also by the film, may have owed something to several disturbing events, including harassment by prowlers, which Frame experienced on Waiheke.
