Auxiliary service

For women, war work never meant fighting. Instead they performed a variety of roles in a vastly expanded military, as listed on this recruitment poster for the Women's War Service Auxiliary.

The poster reads:

We're in – won't you join us!

The Navy, Army and Air Force require many thousands of women for various duties, such as clerks, shorthand typists, telegraphists, cooks, mess hands, transport drivers and personnel for Anti-aircraft batteries. Minimum age for enlistment 18 years. Apply today! Application forms at all the local offices of the Women's War Service Auxiliary.
