Many New Zealanders die from heart disease. One of the public health initiatives encouraging people to make good food choices is the 'pick the tick' campaign. Foods branded with the National Heart Foundation tick contain low levels of saturated fat, trans fat, salt and calories, and specified levels of nutrients, fibre and calcium. A balanced diet is important for general health and is a long-term preventative measure against cardiovascular disease.
