
An advantage of suburban living was the ability to plant vegetable gardens and orchards and become partly self-sufficient in food. As the main breadwinner and household head, men were (at least nominally) in charge of home production. Guides such as the Yates Garden Annual gave useful information on growing vegetables and fruit at home.
