Tractors and other forms of mechanisation such as milking machines reduced the need to employ women and children on the farm in the first half of the 20th century. Together with the rise of refrigerated transport of meat and dairy products, they also made the family farm economically viable. The farmer largely did the work himself or employed just a small number of farm hands.
