This 1939 farmers’ catalogue promotes the way of the future in the form of a tractor. There is not a horse in sight, and the only farm worker is the tractor driver. Tractors were introduced to New Zealand in 1904, but early models were unreliable and unaffordable for decades. In 1919 there were 136 tractors at work in New Zealand. By 1929 there were over 3,000, by 1939 nearly 10,000, and in 1949 over 27,000.
