In the early years of plantation forestry there was considerable research into the best planting methods. The aim was to reduce planting costs and ensure that the seedlings became properly established. It was found that bad planting twisted the tree's roots, causing it to blow about in high winds and develop a bent trunk, which reduced the commercial value of the wood. The correct way to plant a tree is shown in this Forest Service poster, first published in 1985.
