The Auckland University-based Phoenixmagazine became mythologised in New Zealand literary culture for its influence in developing a national literature. It was also praised for its clean and modern typographical design by Bob Lowry. This issue from 1933 highlights Lowry's design philosophy. It includes an abstract image of a phoenix rising from the ashes, a Western cultural symbol of new beginnings.
