Social gossip, fashion news, household hints and recipes typically made up the content of a newspaper's 'ladies' column'. This example is from the Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle on 6 December 1873. Women writers provided the material for these columns, and many of them resented being restricted to such lightweight topics. By 2007 the majority of New Zealand journalists, and the editors of several of the country's leading newspapers, were women.
