Bank book from Maungapōhatu, 1900s

Bank book from Maungapōhatu, 1900s

This bank book was issued for members of the Maungapōhatu community established by Ngāi Tūhoe tribal leader Rua Kēnana in 1907. The cover contains two transliterations from English – peeke (bank) and moni (money). Many such transliterations entered te reo Māori from the 1860s, when the Pākehā population first exceeded the Māori population.
