This bank book was issued for members of the Maungapōhatu community established by Ngāi Tūhoe tribal leader Rua Kēnana in 1907. The cover contains two transliterations from English – peeke (bank) and moni (money). Many such transliterations entered te reo Māori from the 1860s, when the Pākehā population first exceeded the Māori population.
