From 1900 family members who felt they were not adequately provided for in a close relative's will could challenge it in court. This newspaper article from 1932 shows that Reginald Downing made an application to increase his share of his father's estate, which was much less than that of his male siblings. The judge pointed out that there were good reasons for this unequal treatment, but moderately increased Dowling's share because of his poor health. See the full article on PapersPast.
