In the period after the First World War more information became available about how to achieve pleasure during heterosexual sex. Married love (1918) by Marie Stopes provided information on sexual intercourse and how to avoid pregnancy. It generated considerable controversy, and was not easy to obtain in New Zealand. Books such as Married love and Enduring passion, published by Stopes in 1928, were important sources of advice about how to engage in pleasurable sex, at a time when there were strong taboos on talk about sex among family members and friends.
