This advertisement for fencing wire from the Nelson Examiner, March 1866, illustrates the transition in farm fencing. Fencing wire was becoming more readily available, leading to a move away from ditch-and-bank fences and stone walls. These agents are advertising two types of wire, but the lighter and softer galvanised wire was replacing black solid wire, which was harder to work and to keep strained.
