The first colonial treasurers were officials appointed by the governor of the day. Since 1856 the office (known as the minister of finance since 1907) has been held by a minister in an elected government. The chief public servant in the Treasury has been known since that time as the secretary to the Treasury. As of 2011, no woman had served as secretary to the Treasury and only one (Ruth Richardson) had been minister of finance.
