How a bill becomes an act

The stages that a bill goes through before it becomes an act are shown on the left side of this chart, while the progress of the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament and Arms Control Bill is shown on the right. As in this case, it sometimes takes several parliamentary sessions over a number of years before a bill is passed into law.
