Tom Scott produced numerous cartoons of Paul Holmes over the years, including this one from the Evening Post commenting on his role as adjudicator of leaders’ debates in the lead-up to the 1990 election (left to right, Prime Minister Mike Moore, Holmes, and opposition leader Jim Bolger). It alludes to his short stature, and the complaints of his detractors that he talked too much during the debates and trivialised proceedings through showbiz hucksterism. Bolger, a guest at Holmes’ 1992 wedding, complained about Holmes’ role in leaders’ debates in his 1997 memoir; Holmes dedicated an entire chapter of his own memoir, published two years later, to responding to Bolger’s criticisms and defending his record.
