Cartoon of T. P. McLean

Cartoon of T. P. McLean

This cartoon of T. P. (Terry) McLean appeared in the New Zealand Herald on his retirement from the newspaper in 1983. McLean had first joined the Herald as sports editor in 1946. While he covered many sports, his fame was based on his extensive writing about rugby and the All Blacks in particular. In a long career he produced some 30 books, and became known for his honest and trenchant judgements. He was the only sports journalist to be knighted and, as a mark of respect for his work, the New Zealand Sports Journalists Association named their top award after him – the Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Award. McLean died on 11 July 2004.
