'Sketches at the hockey tournament', 1902

The 1902 Ladies' Hockey Tournament, held in Wellington, inspired this full-page cartoon. About 1,000 people wearing streamers in team colours are said to have attended one game between Wellington and 'visitors'. A reporter stated that 'whatever idea may have existed ... that ladies' hockey was another of the species of "afternoon tea outings" must have been entirely dispelled by the just-concluded ladies' tournament'.
