In 1936 regular radio broadcasts of parliamentary debates were introduced by the new Labour government, led by Michael Joseph ('Mickey') Savage, who is depicted as Mickey Mouse in this cartoon. He is perched on the head of colleague Robert Semple, and exchanges words with his opponent George Forbes, seated on the shoulders of Gordon Coates. Meanwhile their debate is broadcast to the nation.
