Story: Cold War

Thrown out of Café ANZUS

Thrown out of Café ANZUS

In 1985 the government bowed to public pressure and banned the visit of the USS Buchanan on the basis that the United States government refused to say whether or not it was nuclear-armed. The US and Australia saw the ship ban as a repudiation of New Zealand's ANZUS commitments and they began to freeze New Zealand out. In this 1986 cartoon US President Ronald Reagan and Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke are sitting in 'Café ANZUS', while New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange is booted out and accused of free-loading by US Secretary of State George Shultz.
