French and Māori at Kororāreka

French and Māori at Kororāreka

French artists often sailed with explorers, producing detailed work that included depictions of Māori life and customs. Here the artist Barthelemy Lauvergne, who visited on a corvette with Captain C. P. T. de Laplace in 1831, shows Māori helping French sailors haul in fishing lines at Kororāreka (Russell).
