Isabella Aylmer's Distant homes; or, the Graham family in New Zealand (1862) is the first novel written by a woman about New Zealand. The Graham family of England have lived a comfortable life, but when they unexpectedly lose their money after their bank fails, the family emigrates to New Zealand and settles in Canterbury. This colour plate from the first edition records the rescue by older siblings Tom and Lucy of the youngest child, Aps, after he plunges into a rather English-looking river near the family home.
