Story: Opera and musical theatre

A set design by Raymond Boyce

A set design by Raymond Boyce

Theatre designer Raymond Boyce trained in London and immigrated to New Zealand in 1953 to work for theatrical company The New Zealand Players. He began working with the New Zealand Opera Company in the late 1950s, and created stunning set designs for many of their productions. This watercolour depicts his design for the living room in Susanna's secret, a one-act opera by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari. Boyce later went on to design sets for the Australian Opera Company and Wellington City Opera, among many other projects.
