Drinking under the table

The new post-war restaurant proprietors chafed at New Zealand's restrictive liquor licence laws, which prevented diners drinking alcohol with their meals. The Gourmet's Otto Groen was an outspoken advocate for change. He commissioned artist David Kennedy to design this flyer which, while satirical in style, accurately recorded the lengths to which restaurateurs and patrons were prepared to go in order to have a drink. Sticking flowers and candles into open bottles of wine when the police walked through the door was a well-practised trick.
