This painting by an unknown artist shows a picnic in the early 1860s at Woodhaugh, Dunedin. Community picnics at this time were highly organised affairs, with large amounts of food, organised games or sports, and sometimes music and dancing. For the city dwellers of Dunedin, picnic sites such as the bush at Woodhaugh provided a welcome change from the town.
