Charles Emilius Gold’s painting was completed almost eight years after the battle at Wairau. This occurred when Nelson settlers, hungry for land, began to survey the Wairau valley. Te Rauparaha objected that the lands had never been purchased, and on 17 June 1843 there was a brief fight in which 22 Europeans, including Arthur Wakefield, and at least four Māori were killed.
