Europeans involved in the declaration: James Busby

James Busby is shown in this 1832 miniature oil painting by Richard Read. Busby was still in his early 30s when he became British Resident in New Zealand the following year. He organised the selection of the national flag by northern chiefs in 1834, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1835.
