Auckland Anniversary regatta, 1862

Auckland Anniversary regatta, 1862

Auckland province celebrates its anniversary on 29 January, and the main event is a regatta on Waitematā Harbour. This tradition dates from before 1853, when the provinces were established. Māori participated in the events, as this painting of the war-canoe race of 1862 shows. In the background are HMS Miranda (left) and HMS Fawn.
