Story: Women’s movement

Feminist art often recalled women of the past, celebrated relationships between women, or recorded the ordinary detail of women’s lives. Claudia Pond Eyley’s painting ‘Shield for ancient mothers’ (1983) used images drawn from many cultures in a series of triangular shields. The images include the Venus of Willendorf, a drawing by one of Pond Eyley’s daughters, and a fragment of a Max Ernst painting called ‘The lone swimmer’. The painting was a celebration of the continuity of life through all cultures and over thousands of years.
