Story: City images

Jacques Carabain’s 1889 view of Queen Street, Auckland, is photographic in its realism. Buildings are faithfully reproduced, shadows suggest afternoon light, and even litter and street muck are portrayed. Urban views are relatively rare from this period as artists were more interested in ‘grappling with the picturesque trappings of forest or mountain than with the realities of the inner city'.
