Planned eco-suburb, Kāpiti Coast

This artist’s drawing shows a 2014 concept drawing for Ngārara, an ‘eco-suburb’ proposed for the Kāpiti Coast, north of Wellington. The initial plan (later down-sized because of the Kāpiti Expressway) was to build 1,700 energy-efficient houses and apartments, with areas of wetland and forest linked by cycleways, walkways and horse-riding paths to discourage car use. ‘Garden suburbs’ like this are rare in New Zealand, but may become more common.
