Early New Zealand towns were venues for all sorts of social and cultural events. Music was an important source of entertainment and cultural enrichment. Large balls in public venues like the Choral Hall in Auckland combined music with dancing. They were a way for people to meet friends, make new acquaintances and experience a slice of civilised culture.
