Remutaka incline accident

An artist’s gruesome impression of an 1880 accident on the Remutaka incline which was first published in the New Zealand Mail that year. A gust of gale-force wind, common in the Remutaka Range, blew all of a train’s carriages off the line. Three people were killed and 21 were hurt, with one dying later of their injuries. Windbreaks were built along parts of the line to prevent a recurrence.
