Māori warrior

Māori warrior

This engraving is a copy of a sketch of a Māori warrior by Sydney Parkinson, an artist who was on board the Endeavour when it visited New Zealand in 1769. The man’s apparent vitality illustrates Joseph Banks’ comment that Māori appeared to be very healthy.
