This aerial view of the Rosedale waste-water treatment plant in Auckland is dominated by the oxidation ponds, also known as waste stabilisation ponds. Exposure to sunlight and oxygen lets aerobic bacteria break down organic matter. This stage of sewage treatment is often referred to as secondary treatment. Rosedale on the North Shore is the second-largest treatment works in the Auckland region. It treats the effluent of around 185,000 people.
