During breeding, adult white herons shuttle between the nest and nearby estuaries to feed and bring food to their young. Their breeding cycle coincides with the upstream migration of whitebait, but they also eat small eels and fish, tadpoles and frogs, and will sometimes take mice, ducklings and other small birds.
