This scene of bustling activity on Queens Wharf, Auckland, was painted by Edward Gifford in 1887. Auckland continued to show signs of prosperity in the 1880s, with a continued boom in the trade of kauri timber and ongoing returns from the Thames goldfields. However some Auckland merchants did suffer in the slump at the end of the decade.
